exfoliation adviceExfoliating is a key part of regular facial skincare with a host of benefits, but how do you do it right without overdoing it?

Cosmedics Skin Clinics founder, Dr Ross Perry, was asked for his advice; which has now been published in an online Guide to Exfoliation on health, beauty, fitness and lifestyle website,

Why Exfoliate?

Dr Ross Perry explains the benefit of exfoliation:

Exfoliation goes a step further than washing or cleansing, in that it gets to grips with the build-up of dead skin cells, grime and excess sebum at the skin’s surface. This reveals fresher, brighter skin – but also stimulates cell turnover.

How to Choose an Exfoliator

Dr Ross Perry advises:

It depends firstly on your skin type and concerns, and secondly, whether you are looking for an at-home product or a salon/clinic treatment.

If in doubt, at home, always err on the side of caution, choosing mild exfoliants that you are confident in using. In a salon or clinic, trained staff should be available to examine your skin, discuss your concerns and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs.

Exfoliating at Home

Dr Perry gives advice on how to exfoliate within your skincare regime:

Some daily cleansers have exfoliating ingredients, but these tend to be for clients who struggle with acne.

For most people, a weekly at-home exfoliant is plenty. This could be a scrub or a home peel.

Professional Treatments

Salons and clinics offer an array of exfoliating options, including scrubs and acid peels. Dr Perry says:

…for a more in-depth exfoliation, consider visiting a salon or clinic for a chemical peel or microdermabrasion. These are professional procedures which work at a deeper level and, therefore, have more noticeable benefits.

A professional peel can improve fine lines, pigmentation and complexion.

What To Do After Exfoliating

After exfoliation, the skin will be soft and fresh. Apply a gentle serum or light moisturiser and it will be very readily absorbed. This not only soothes and hydrates the skin, but also takes advantage of its newly exfoliated state to deliver hydration and nutrients at a deeper level.

Professional Exfoliation Treatments

Exfoliation is an excellent booster for the skin, but there are professional treatments which can offer more intensive results in a more controlled environment.

Cosmedics Beauty based in Putney and Harley Street offers a range of options:

Benefits of a professional exfoliation treatment could include:

  • More radiant skin
  • Clearer/more even complexion
  • Reduced fine lines/wrinkles
  • Reduced discoloration
  • Stimulation of new collagen and skin cells

Results depend on the individual and treatment chosen. Courses are often recommended for more significant results, as these build up with each session.
