Do They Work?

skin creamMany skincare products now contain vitamins, but some people wonder how effective applying vitamins to the skin actually is.

Which vitamins work on the skin?  Is it better to have vitamins taken in food as part of a healthy diet?

We asked Dr Ross Perry – Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ founder, Aesthetic Doctor and GP – for his expert opinion on how useful vitamin skin creams and products are in improving the condition of the skin.

Which Vitamins Can Help the Skin?

There are 3 vitamins which are most commonly associated with the skin.

  • Vitamin A – also known as retinol. Vitamin A  is important for helping to keep skin healthy and when it comes to skincare, Vitamin A is also best for stimulating collagen
  • Vitamin C – also known as ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is an antioxidant. This works to prevent DNA damage to the skin by reducing the effects of free radicals. It helps protect cells and tissue and aids wound healing
  • Vitamin E – Vitamin E is another antioxidant, so also helps to prevent DNA damage to the skin by reducing the effects of free radicals. Vitamin E helps to maintain cell structures and protect cell membranes

Applying vitamins topically to the skin is very different from ingesting them. Dr Ross Perry explains:

“Ingesting has little effects for people with balanced diets and are not deficient

“Topically application helps reduce sun damage by its antioxidant properties in reducing free radicals that damage and weaken our collagen.

“It’s another tool in the armoury and best cream products will contain vitamins as well as a good SPF”
