Laser hair removal is a very popular method of permanently reducing unwanted hair growth on the body or face.

But while the majority of treatments are safe and successful, the growth in laser hair removal and the lack of regulation for the sector is exposing clients to risk.

The Daily Mail warned the public to be vigilant about choosing the right provider, featuring the cases of a number of patients who had sustained burns as a consequence of laser hair removal gone wrong.

Unregulated Industry

The laser hair removal industry is unregulated, which means that:

  • Anyone can buy a laser or IPL machine (second hand or imported machines can be purchased via Ebay without any restriction)
  • Anyone can carry out laser hair removal – no minimum qualifications apply

This lack of control has led to cases of injury.

Julie Vallance, Lawyer at Lime Personal Injury, has been involved in 50 laser hair removal cases in the past five years. She says none have reached court as salons settle because they usually can’t produce paperwork that proves their staff were trained properly.

David Gault is a BAAPS registered plastic surgeon who helped develop laser hair removal technology 25 years ago and now acts as an expert witness for patients seeking compensation. He explains:

A client may get a technician who is not familiar with the laser machine

In some cases, the record keeping is also woefully inadequate, so there’s no record of how a client’s skin reacted in the last session or what the best power or wavelength is for their skin type.

He adds there is an issue around clients’ expectations and clients trying to give results:

…some salons turn up the power of their machines to try to improve results – and that’s when you get more side effects.

Reputable Laser Hair Removal

While there are no specific controls in place, clients can protect themselves by choosing sensibly:

  • a reputable laser hair removal centre
  • excellent laser technology e.g. Soprano ICE system (not cheap IPL)
  • trained and experienced beauty therapists

Cosmedics’ Putney Beauty Salon offers laser hair removal with the Soprano ICE system which has an excellent safety record.

The system was selected by Dr Ross Perry who is Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, which is registered with the CQC.
