microdermabrasion londonMicrodermabrasion has become a very popular procedure, actually in the top 5 non-surgical procedures in the USA in 2011 according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

The procedure works by mechanically removing the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal newer, brighter skin beneath. It is essentially an exfoliation procedure, which can improve complexion, fine lines and even acne scarring.

With this popularity has come a new wave of ‘at home’ solutions. So are these cheaper solutions any good?

While the price might present an appealing advantage, the results are generally not as good as a professional might achieve:

  • they may suit a quick ‘buff and polish’, but home microdermabrasion  abrasive creams are lower quality and generally far less efficient
  • cheaper ingredients can break down or cause sensitivity
  • the buffing/massage tool is unlikely to be the same standard as professional kit
  • treating yourself while looking in a mirror isn’t as easy or thorough as being treated by another person, who can take a more even approach and apply the right pressure
  • being more intensive, professional treatments are more likely to improve conditions such as acne scarring by going deeper
  • replacing stock of the abrasive and brushes/buffing heads can be costly – actually making a professional treatment
