Electrolysis LondonAll women can expect to have some degree of hair growth on the top lip, but some women can find that it becomes quite a noticeable ‘moustache’.

Facial hair varies in colour, thickness and volume as we age and our bodies go through hormonal changes. For those with dark and/or thick hair, the top lip can become quite a problem. If the hair changes, it could be related to a hormonal imbalance perhaps due to menopause or polycystic ovaries and it is worth checking with a GP if it seems abnormal.

However, nowadays many women arrange to have hair removal for the top lip to avoid a ‘shadow’ that can appear even with fine or light coloured hair.

There are a number ways to deal with it, but the overriding key is to bear in mind that the skin around your mouth is sensitive and delicate, so treatment needs to be gentle and suitable for the facial area.

Options for treatment at home include:

  • Bleaching – removing the colour, but not the hair, can give some improvement and is quick to do. However, be  careful to choose a gentle product and do a patch test first to avoid irritation
  • Hair Removal Cream – home depilatory creams can give results for a few weeks, but again it is important to choose a formulation designed for facial use
  • Shaving is not generally recommended, as the hair will grow back thick and stubbly, because anything that stimulates the skin’s circulation “feeds” hair, encouraging it to grow stronger
  • Plucking might be appropriate for single thick hairs, but not great on a whole area. Also be aware that it can result in ingrown hairs

Professional treatment options:

  • Threading or Waxing are quick treatments carried out by beauty therapists. These both remove hair at the root, so that results last for a few weeks. With repeated treatments, hair will grow back sparser
  • Laser hair removal is the ultimate choice for permanent hair removal. Cosmedics offer the Soprano laser hair removal machine, which unlike many others, is actually effective on facial hair even when it is fine or fair
  • Electrolysis is medically approved and suits smaller areas such as the top lip, as it works to destroy the hair a follicle at a time
  • Alkaline facial hair removal wash is a less well known yet highly effective solution, using an alkaline solution to remove the hair. It is especially suited to fine, downy facial hair. The hair will eventually grow back sparser for super long-lasting results

Everybody is different, both in terms of their hair/skin types and the results they expect from treatment. A trained beauty therapist will be able to advise as to the best approach for hair removal to suit the individual.
